Madrid : An explosion at a chemical plant near Seville sent a huge pillar of smoke over the city and prompted Spanish authorities to urge nearby residents to stay indoors, but no one was reported injured, emergency services said Wednesday. Officials recommended that local residents close their windows to stop smoke fumes from entering their homes. The explosion occurred midday in an industrial park in Alcalá de Guadaíra, located about 20 minutes to the east of Seville’s city center. Manama : Dr. Mohamed bin Mubarak Juma, Minister of Education and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of Bahrain (UOB), approved the appointment of new directors to several key departments at the university. Mahmood Ali Ahmed Al Hayki was appointed as the Director of Alumni Affairs, Lama Yousif Ahmed was appointed as the Director of Communication, and Abdulaziz Mohamed Sharif was appointed as Director of Student Activities and Services. Manila : A restive volcano in central Philippines briefly erupted Tuesday, spewing a 4.5-kilometer (2.8-mile) ash plume and debris into the sky as its rumblings were heard nearby. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said a moderately explosive eruption occurred at the summit crater of Kanlaon Volcano before dawn, lasting five minutes based on seismic and infrasound data. “The eruption generated a greyish voluminous plume that rose approximately 4.5 kilometers above the vent before drifting to the southwest,” the institute’s bulletin added.
