Kuala Lumpur : Indonesia and Kuwait emphasised their commitment to strengthening cooperation in energy security to address global economic and geopolitical challenges.
The commitment was highlighted during a meeting in Jakarta between Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto and Khaled Al Yassin, Ambassador of the State of Kuwait to Indonesia.
Hartarto said bilateral relations between the two countries are built on a solid foundation that supports expanding cooperation, particularly in the field of energy security. He noted that cooperation includes several strategic projects, including the participation of Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company (KUFPEC) in eight oil and gas exploration projects across Indonesia.
He added that the two countries formalised their cooperation in the energy sector through a memorandum of understanding on oil, gas, and petrochemicals signed in 2019.
For his part, Ambassador Al Yassin said the agreements signed between Kuwait and Indonesia reflect the strategic importance Indonesia holds for Kuwait, particularly in the economic field.
The two sides also agreed to accelerate negotiations on a free trade agreement between Indonesia and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), with the aim of concluding talks by the end of 2026.
According to KUNA, bilateral trade increased by 10.69% to USD 606 million in 2025, compared with USD 547.5 million in 2024, while Kuwaiti investments in Indonesia rose to USD 1.2 million in 2025.
