Washington : US President Donald Trump issued an executive order on Saturday imposing new tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China, aiming to fulfil his campaign promises despite potential price increases for American consumers.
The presidential order included the declaration of an economic emergency, imposing a 10% tariff on all Chinese imports and 25% on imports from Mexico and Canada, except for Canadian oil, which will be subject to a 10% tariff. These countries are among the US’s largest trading partners.
The White House stated that the order includes a mechanism to raise tariffs if these countries retaliate, a move they had previously warned against.
President Trump said the measures aim to pressure these nations to take more effective steps to stop the flow of fentanyl into the US and align with his protectionist policies to boost domestic industry and generate federal revenue.
These measures may provoke international reactions, especially from the affected countries, which could lead to new global trade tensions.
