San Francisco : A massive outage knocked out power to 130,000 homes and businesses in San Francisco on Saturday, Pacific Gas and Electric Co. said. The power failure left a large swath of the northern part of the city in the dark, beginning with the Richmond and Presidio neighbourhoods and areas around Golden Gate Park in the early afternoon and growing in size. The outage represents roughly one-third of the utility company’s customers in the city. Geneva :The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned of the rapid spread of a new influenza strain in the Northern Hemisphere, emphasising that vaccination remains the most effective form of protection. Dr. Wenqing Zhang, Head of the Global Respiratory Threats Unit at WHO, explained that this year has seen the emergence and rapid spread of a new influenza subtype (AH3N2), named J.2.4.1 or subclade K. Taipei : At least three people were killed and 11 others injured late on Friday in an armed attack in Taiwan, according to local authorities. Taiwan’s national news agency reported that a man carrying a knife and smoke bombs launched a random attack on crowds in the capital, Taipei. Police said the suspect later died after jumping from the sixth floor of a department store building and was pronounced dead at hospital. Tolu : Seventeen people were killed, and 20 were injured after a bus carrying school children fell off a cliff in a rural area in northern Colombia. Andres Julian, Governor of Antioquia, said that the bus was travelling from the Caribbean town of Tolu to Medellín after a school trip and was carrying students from Antioqueño High School. The students had been celebrating their graduation on the beach, he added, on Sunday night.
