Portugal reimposed restrictions in and around the capital Lisbon on Tuesday to check fresh coronavirus outbreaks, prompting fears the summer tourist season will take a major hit. Prime Minister Antonio Costa had said Monday some coronavirus curbs would be reimposed in the Lisbon even if the country of 10 million people has limited casualties to some 1,500 deaths and some 40,000 cases to date. The new measures came after official data showed 9,221 new COVID-19 cases detected, notably in the capital and the wider Lisbon region, between May 21 and June 21. Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Robert Redfield, both members of the White House coronavirus task force, said they are committed to increasing — not slowing down — testing for coronavirus. The comments come as President Trump has come under fire for saying that he told staff to slow down testing for the disease to hide the discovery of more cases. While members of his own administration have said the comments were in jest, Trump insisted today he was not kidding. Asked about the state of testing, Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said he has not been told…
A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck southern Mexico on Tuesday, triggering a tsunami warning along Central America’s Pacific coast and as far south as Ecuador. The epicenter was near Crucecita, in the southeastern state of Oaxaca, but the shock wave was felt as far away as Mexico City, some 700 kilometers (430 miles) distant, where it sent frightened residents rushing into the streets. The US Geological Survey reported that the quake struck with a magnitude of 7.4, at a depth of 23 kilometers. After initially publishing a reading of 7.1, the Mexican Seismological Service revised its figure to 7.5. The…

Nations around the world and U.S. states struggled mightily Tuesday to contain a surge of coronavirus infections as lockdowns eased. Germany slapped new restrictions on a region where hundreds were infected at a slaughterhouse and a top U.S. expert headed to Capitol Hill at a fraught moment in the U.S. battle against the virus. Rapid increases in cases across the U.S. South and West are raising fears that progress against the virus is slipping away, as states reopen and many Americans resist wearing masks for political reasons and refuse to limit contacts to social-distancing bubbles. The United States has the…
