Rome : The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) warned that 58 million people are at risk of acute hunger or famine if urgent funding for food aid is not secured, following a 40% drop in donations compared to last year.
WFP indicated that 343 million people are facing food insecurity due to conflict and climate change, and it aims to assist 123 million people this year. It also noted that the United States has contributed less than 10% of its 2024 funding, threatening humanitarian programmes in countries such as Sudan, Palestine, and Syria.
The programme announced that it needs $2.49 billion to support relief efforts in several countries around the world, warning that food assistance programmes for children in Yemen, Afghanistan, and Syria could be suspended if the funding shortage persists.
