Manama : The Ministry of Interior announced the introduction of new vehicle categories and classifications under the Traffic Law as part of efforts to keep pace with developments in transportation methods and regulate the use of electric bikes and off-road vehicles, in a manner that enhances road safety and protects road users.

In this regard, the General Directorate of Traffic stated that Decision (58) of 2026, published in the Official Gazette, includes a number of regulations governing the use of such vehicles, including specifying designated areas and times for operation, linking usage to appropriate age groups, and requiring parental or guardian supervision for users below the specified age.
The decision also regulates the use of electric bicycles and electric scooters on internal roads only, with a maximum speed limit of 25 km/h, while prohibiting their use on highways to preserve public safety.

The directorate noted that violations of the specified regulations would subject offenders to legal accountability under the provisions of the Traffic Law, particularly concerning the responsibilities of vehicle owners and parents or guardians, including restrictions on handing over vehicles to individuals outside the permitted age category.

The decision stipulates penalties for certain violations, including imprisonment, fines, and vehicle impoundment for up to 60 days, underscoring the importance of establishing a clear legal and regulatory framework to prevent misuse and safeguard public safety.
