Istanbul : Ambassador Khaled Yousif Al Jalahma, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs, represented the Kingdom of Bahrain at an extraordinary ministerial session of the Arab League Council in Istanbul.
The meeting was convened at the request of the Republic of Iraq to discuss developments in the region and the military escalation between Israel and the Islamic Republic of Iran, in the presence of Arab foreign ministers and the Secretary-General of the Arab League.
A statement issued at the conclusion of the meeting stressed the importance of intensifying regional and international efforts to reduce tensions and reach a ceasefire and comprehensive de-escalation. It called for the resumption of negotiations to reach an agreement on the Iranian nuclear programme and expressed support for all efforts aimed at restoring calm.
The statement underscored that diplomacy and dialogue, in accordance with the principles of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, remain the only viable path to resolving regional crises. It stressed that the current situation cannot be resolved through military means.
It also emphasised the need to respect the freedom of navigation in international waterways, in line with relevant international legal frameworks, to prevent the broader economic and energy security implications of the conflict.
Furthermore, it highlighted the necessity of refraining from targeting nuclear facilities that are under the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency, in accordance with relevant IAEA resolutions and United Nations Security Council decisions.
Hatem Abdulhamid Hatem, Chief of the Organisations Sector, also attended the meeting.
