Seoul : South Korea issued Level 1 forest fire response alert early on Sunday, as a wildfire erupted in the forests of Yangyang in Gangwon Province in the northeast part of the country, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of people. The Korea Forest Service activated Level 1 alerts as firefighting efforts continued in the popular camping and beach town, which is now estimated to cover between 10 and 50 hectares. Forest authorities deployed 101 fire suppression vehicles and 326 personnel to contain the blaze and 25 helicopters are on their way to be deployed on Sunday.
Hanoi : The death toll from torrential rain, flooding and landslides in central Vietnam has risen to 55, with 13 people reported missing, the country’s disaster agency said on Saturday. Rainfall exceeded 1,900 mm (74.8 inches) in some parts of central Vietnam over the past week. The region is a major coffee production belt and home to popular beaches, but it is also prone to storms and floods. Dhaka : At least five people, including a child, were killed and around 100 injured when a magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Bangladesh on Friday, the government said, with buildings damaged in many areas including the densely populated capital Dhaka. Tremors were felt in eastern states in neighbouring India that border Bangladesh, but there were no immediate reports of major damage there, authorities said. Riyadh : The Kingdom of Bahrain achieved its highest ever result at the Sixth Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, surpassing its previous record for both gold medals and total medals.
