Tokyo : Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, President of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), chaired the AFC Extraordinary Congress in Tokyo, which approved amendments to the confederation’s statutes to align its electoral cycle with changes to the international football calendar.
The amendments follow plans to hold the AFC Asian Cup in even numbered years from 2032, introducing transitional governance arrangements to ensure continuity in overseeing the competition.

Under the revised statutes, elections for key AFC leadership positions will take place in 2027, with elected officials assuming office on January 1, 2028, for a term ending in 2032. Current Executive Committee members will remain in office until the end of 2027.
Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim said the amendments would strengthen governance, transparency, and continuity within the AFC. He also expressed support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s re-election and emphasised the importance of unity among Asian football associations.
