Beijing : Xi Jinping, Chinese President, held talks with visiting US President Donald Trump at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Thursday.
Xi said he looked forward to working with Trump to “set the course and steer the giant ship of China-US relations”, making 2026 “a historic, landmark year that opens up a new chapter in China-US relations.”
According to Xinhua News Agency, Xi said China and the United States have more shared interests than differences, adding that success in one country represents an opportunity for the other and that stable bilateral relations would benefit the world.
Xi also said safeguarding peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is “the biggest common denominator” between China and the United States.
On economic ties, Xi said China-US economic and trade relations are mutually beneficial and win-win in nature. He added that the two countries’ economic and trade teams had achieved “generally balanced and positive outcomes” in the latest round of bilateral trade talks on Wednesday, describing the results as “good news for the people of the two countries and the world.”
For his part, Trump said it was a great honour to pay a state visit to China, describing Xi as “a great leader” and China as “a great country”.
Trump said he looked forward to a “great discussion” with Xi, adding that the summit could become “the greatest summit ever”. He also expressed optimism about the future of bilateral relations, saying cooperation between the two countries could lead to a “fantastic future”.
Trump also praised the accompanying US business delegation and encouraged representatives of the American business community to expand cooperation with China.
