Kabul : Severe flooding caused by thunderstorms in parts of Afghanistan has left 17 people dead and 26 injured, causing widespread damage to property and infrastructure.
The number of casualties could increase as crews from the country’s National Disaster Management Authority continue to survey the affected areas and assess the damage, the authority’s spokesman Yousuf Hammad said in a statement.
Hammad said the severe weather also left 147 homes either completely or partially destroyed, damaged 80 kilometres of roads, and destroyed large areas of agricultural land and irrigation canals.
Afghanistan is experiencing sharp climate fluctuations, with seasonal rains often causing destructive floods that increase the suffering of residents and directly affect infrastructure and the agricultural sector in the country.
