Istanbul : The parliamentary delegation of the Kingdom of Bahrain participated in a meeting of the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), held as part of the 152nd General Assembly in Istanbul.
During the meeting, the delegation called for strengthening the governance of artificial intelligence (AI) and developing legislative frameworks to regulate its use, to safeguard democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
The delegation was represented by MP Mariam Saleh Al Dhaen and Dr. Mahdi Abdulaziz Al Showaikh.

Dr. Mahdi Al Showaikh highlighted that artificial intelligence should be governed within a clear ethical and legal framework centred on human interests, emphasising the importance of dedicated legislation in this field.
Dr. Al Showaikh noted that rapid developments in artificial intelligence present challenges to democratic systems and human rights, underlining the need for responsible use, transparency, accountability, and data protection.
Dr. Al Showaikh also highlighted risks related to algorithmic bias, privacy violations, and misinformation, stressing the need for flexible legislative frameworks and strengthened parliamentary oversight to balance innovation with the protection of rights and freedoms.
