Magnitude 7.7 earthquake strikes eastern Indonesia

Jakarta : A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off eastern Indonesia early Saturday, followed by several aftershocks, while tsunami waves of less than one metre were recorded in several areas.
 
Strong shaking was felt for about one minute in areas including Nagekeo and Bima, prompting many residents to leave their homes, with no initial reports of major damage.
 
Video footage showed parts of buildings collapsing in Maumere on Flores Island, while Kompas TV showed patients being evacuated from a hospital in East Nusa Tenggara Province.
 
Indonesia’s geophysics agency BMKG recorded the first earthquake at 4:58 a.m. local time at a depth of 15 kilometres, followed by several aftershocks. Australia’s tsunami warning centre confirmed that the undersea earthquake posed no tsunami threat to the Australian mainland or its islands.
