New York : Ambassador Tariq Al Bannai, Kuwait’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, announced continued coordination with UN member states to submit a new draft resolution aimed at securing freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and ensuring the continuity of international trade
The statement was delivered on behalf of the Kingdom of Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Jordan before a UN General Assembly session. He noted that the initiative reflects the seriousness of current threats and aims to strengthen international consensus on the principles of international law governing international waterways.
Al Bannai commended the efforts of the Kingdom of Bahrain, as President of the Security Council for the current month, in leading consultations to reach a balanced draft resolution, noting that failure to adopt the previous draft due to a veto sends a negative message regarding the protection of international maritime routes.
He highlighted that Iran’s actions in the Strait of Hormuz pose a direct threat to global energy security and supply chains, stressing that the right of countries in the region to defend their security and sovereignty is guaranteed under the UN Charter.
He underlined that the security of the Arabian Gulf is essential to global economic stability, warning that failure to implement international obligations would encourage further violations, with potential humanitarian consequences affecting global food security.
Al Bannai emphasised the commitment to collective international action to ensure compliance with relevant Security Council resolutions and uphold freedom of navigation under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
