Roma : Antonio Tajani, Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of the Italian Republic, said that his personal data had been leaked and published on the dark web by hackers.
Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister of Italy, expressed solidarity and full support for Tajani, stressing that the sale of confidential information relating to government officials was a matter of “serious concern”.
Tajani highlighted that his positions in support of the freedom and independence of a sovereign state had made him a target of the attack, adding that the hackers were seeking to collect further information about him and his family and were willing to pay for it. Reports indicated that the attacks were in response to the Italian Foreign Ministry’s efforts to strengthen its cybersecurity sector.
Meanwhile, screenshots seen by Reuters showed an image of Tajani on a list of 18 citizens, which also included cybersecurity experts. In this regard, a source close to the minister told Reuters that the material had been detected in a section of the dark web accessible through the Tor network, as part of monitoring and investigative activities carried out by the relevant cybersecurity authorities. The source confirmed that investigations were ongoing to establish the circumstances of the incident.
