Paris : French President Emmanuel Macron has appointed Michel Barnier, a prominent right-wing politician, as the new prime minister, succeeding Gabriel Attal, who resigned earlier this month.
Barnier, renowned for his role in negotiating the Brexit agreement with Britain, is tasked with forming a new government capable of addressing France’s political and economic challenges.
The new government faces a complex political landscape, with a parliament divided among three main blocs and no clear majority for any party.
Barnier brings extensive political experience, having held several prominent positions in France and Europe, including Minister for Republicans (LR), Member of the European Parliament, and European Commissioner for the Internal Market and Services. He was also a presidential candidate in the 2021 Republican Conference, where he finished third with 23.9% of the vote in the first round.
