Dakar : The Democratic Republic of the Congo has, for the first time during the current Ebola outbreak, recorded 4,053 confirmed cases, including 1,850 deaths, according to the country’s National Institute of Public Health.
Researchers reported more than 500 suspected cases between mid-January and May 15.
The outbreak has been described as the fastest spreading and the world’s second largest Ebola outbreak, driven by delays in case detection, pressure on disease surveillance systems, and shortages of vaccines and treatments for the circulating strain.
Only the 2014–2016 West Africa Ebola outbreak, which recorded more than 28,000 cases across Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, exceeded the current outbreak.
