Manama : The World Weightlifting Championships 2024, under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, entered its final stages with 473 athletes from 92 countries competing at Khalifa Sports City Arena.
Egypt’s Sara Samir secured the first Arab medal with silver in the women’s 81kg category, lifting a total of 262kg. China’s Guifang Liao claimed gold, while Mongolia’s Mönkhjantsangiin Ankhtsetseg won bronze.
In the men’s 96kg category, Kazakhstan’s Nurgissa Adiletuly took gold with 388kg. Revaz Davitadze earned silver with the same total weight but a lower snatch result, and Iran’s Ali Alipour claimed bronze with 387kg.
North Korea’s Hyang Song Kuk earned gold in the women’s 76kg category with 264kg. Colombia’s Miyareth Mendoza won silver with 248kg, and Nigeria’s Sarah Ovayioza earned bronze with 245kg.
The event showcased Bahrain’s rich culture through traditional performances, coinciding with National Day celebrations. Commended for its organisation, the championship reflected Bahrain’s capability to host world class events, with volunteers ensuring smooth operations for attendees.
The final competitions promise more excitement as athletes vie for top honours in various categories.
