New York : The Kingdom of Bahrain underlined the importance of continuing the United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia (UNVIC) to support security, stability and sustainable development, and renewed its support for the efforts of the Colombian government and people to achieve peace and stability.
This was stated in Bahrain’s address delivered by Ambassador Jamal Fares Al Rowaie, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the UN in New York, during a UN Security Council session on the Republic of Colombia.
The Council was briefed by Miroslav Jenča, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Colombia and Head of UNVIC.
Al Rowaie commended the mission’s role in monitoring the implementation of the Final Agreement to End the Conflict and Build a Stable and Lasting Peace, tracking progress in rural areas, supporting infrastructure development, coordinating transitional justice efforts, and working with relevant parties to curb violence and promote dialogue to ensure the success of elections scheduled for this year.
He also welcomed the Secretary-General’s report on Colombia, noting the progress made in implementing the peace agreement, particularly in comprehensive rural reform, reintegration, security and protection. He described this progress as a positive step that should be built upon, and emphasised the need to continue efforts in transitional justice, rural development and investment in sustainable development to support security, stability and prosperity in Colombia.
The Permanent Representative also commended the role of the State of Qatar in hosting mediation rounds between the Colombian government and relevant participants. He underlined the importance of coordinated efforts by all involved and the international community to implement the agreement, including accelerating agrarian reform, integrating marginalised groups, protecting civilians, and ensuring sustained international financial and technical support for the peace process in the Republic of Colombia.
