South Korea : The billionaire boss of South Korea’s Samsung empire will be freed from jail on Friday after serving part of a 30-month sentence for bribing former South Korea president Park Geun-hye. Lee Jae-yong, Samsung’s vice-chairman and de facto leader, will be released on 13 August, the country’s justice minister announced in a live TV briefing. Lee was caught up in a huge corruption scandal that brought down the government Park in 2016. Park was sentenced to 20 years in prison and fined 18bn won (£12m). Berlin : The damage caused by Germany’s deadly floods in July is likely to exceed 26 billion euros (30.6 billion dollars), officials say. The cost alone in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia is expected to be more than 13 billion euros, Premier Armin Laschet told a special session of the region’s parliament on Monday. The damage in the neighbouring state of Rhineland-Palatinate resulting from the floods, which left 184 dead in the two regions, was expected to be at least as high, reports dpa international. Bahrain : The Kingdom of Bahrain condemned the terrorist attack that targeted a police car in Quetta, in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, and resulted in the death and injury of a number of policemen and civilians. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed condolences to the families of the victims and to the people and government of Pakistan, wishing the injured a speedy recovery. It affirmed solidarity of the Kingdom of Bahrain with the Islamic Republic of Pakistan against terrorism, stressing the kingdom’s firm stance in rejecting all forms of violence, extremism and terrorism regardless of their motives.

Bahrain : Bahrain’s national carrier Gulf Air has restored its flagship double daily direct passenger flights to London Heathrow in line with the latest decision by the British authorities to add the Kingdom to their Amber List as of August 8. Bahrain : Bahrain Real Estate Investment Company (Edamah), the real estate arm of the Kingdom’s sovereign wealth fund, Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company, signed a partnership agreement with Minor Hotels, an international hotel owner, operator, and investor, to develop two upscale hotels at Bilaj Aljazayer. London : London’s Tower Bridge was stuck with its roadway arms raised Monday afternoon, snarling traffic on both sides of the River Thames, reports AP.
