CANTIANO : Flash floods swept through several towns Friday in hilly central Italy after hours of exceptionally heavy rain, leaving 10 people dead and at least four missing. Dozens of survivors scrambled onto rooftops or up into trees to await rescue. Floods invaded garages and basements and knocked down doors. DENVER : John Stearns, a four-time time All-Star catcher with the New York Mets, has died after a long battle with cancer. He was 71. Stearns, who played football and baseball at the University of Colorado, died Thursday night in Denver, according to the Mets. BERLIN : Germany is taking control of three Russian-owned refineries in the country to ensure energy security before an embargo on oil from Russia takes effect next year. Two subsidiaries of Russian oil giant Rosneft — Rosneft Deutschland GmbH and RN Refining & Marketing GmbH — will be put under the administration of Germany’s Federal Network Agency, the Economy Ministry said in a statement. Rosneft accounts for about 12% of Germany’s oil refining capacity, importing oil worth several hundred million euros (dollars) every month, the ministry said. APN
Bahrain : Labor and Social Development Minister and Labor Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) Board of Directors Chairman Jamil bin Mohammad Ali Humaidan met with newly appointed Nepali Ambassador to Bahrain Tirtha Raj Wagle. The meeting reviewed bilateral relations, with a focus on labor topics. Bahrain : The Ministry of Health reported the first case of the “Monkeypox” virus in Bahrain. The patient, a 29-year-old male expatriate, has arrived to the Kingdom after recent travels abroad. The patient is experiencing symptoms and has been isolated while receiving the necessary care, based on the adopted protocols.
