Pretoria : President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa took the constitutional oath of office today for his second term at the Union Buildings, the official seat of government in the capital Pretoria. Ramaphosa, aged 71, will lead a coalition government for the next five years, after his party, the African National Congress, lost its majority for the first time in the elections held on May 29 last year.
N’Djamena : At least nine people were killed and several others injured in explosions resulting from a fire at an ammunition depot belonging to the army in the capital city of Chad, N’Djamena. Chad’s Health Minister Abdelmadjid Abderahim reported that more than 46 people were injured in the incident, with expectations of the death toll rising due to severe injuries.

Beijing : Southern China was reeling Tuesday from heavy rains that triggered landslides killing at least nine people, knocking out power for entire villages, and burying crops. Four people were killed and two others were missing in Wuping county in the coastal province of Fujian due to landslides caused by torrential rain. Severe downpours started on Sunday afternoon, with authorities measuring 372.4 millimeters (14.7 inches) of rainfall over 24 hours. Aden : During the second week of June 2024, the “Masam” project for clearing land mines in Yemen was able to dismantle 1,556 mines in various governorates of Yemen, including 52 anti-tank mines, 1,503 unexploded ordnance, and one explosive device. This brings to 2,810 the number of mines removed during the month of June in Yemen and brings the number of mines removed since the beginning of the “Masam” project until now to 447,668 mines randomly planted in various Yemeni lands to claim more innocent victims, including children, women and the elderly.
