Makkah : The Kingdom of Bahrain won second and third places at the 46th King Abdulaziz International Quran Competition, held in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, with the participation of 334 contestants representing 133 countries. Lima : A magnitude 6.7 earthquake shook Peru’s southern Andes Mountains on Thursday, injuring at least two people and damaging homes, health centres and schools. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicentre was located 38 kilometres (24 miles) northwest of the city of Upahuacho, in the Parinacochas province of the Ayacucho region. It had a depth of 66 kilometres (41 miles). The earthquake was felt in several regions of southern Peru, including Ica, Arequipa, Huancavelica, Apurimac and Cusco, as well as in the capital, Lima.

Kinshasa : More than 2,500 people have been killed in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Ebola outbreak, which is spreading rapidly across an expanding area, the United Nations announced on Friday. Julien Harneis, Senior United Nations Ebola Coordinator, noted that the epidemic is spreading across an area larger than France and is expanding faster than response efforts can keep pace with. New Delhi : At least nine people were killed and six others injured after a fire broke out at a hotel in the Republic of India’s Kolkata. Press Trust of India reported that the fire broke out in a building near the West Bengal Fire Department headquarters in central Kolkata. Indian police said that two women and a child were among those killed, and at least 80 people were rescued from the building.
