Abu Dhabi : A number of editors-in-chief in the UAE and Middle East have underscored the significant role of media in conveying accurate and clear messages about the world’s challenges, including climate and environmental issues, as well as technological changes that demand the media’s adaptation to transform these challenges into opportunities that shape the future of media.
In statements to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the sidelines of the inaugural day of the Global Media Congress 2023, which highlighted the pivotal role of environmental media, they emphasised the commitment of media outlets to fostering the skills of journalists, empowering them to become experts in their respective fields, whether in technology or environmental media specialisations. They explained that the media industry is constantly evolving, and it is the responsibility of media editors to elevate the level of institutional and media education.
Mina Al-Oraibi, the editor-in-chief of The National, said that the Global Media Congress 2023 convenes at a pivotal time amidst the media’s transformative journey, presenting a compelling forum to explore the emerging opportunities that accompany this dynamic evolution.
She underscored the role of environmental media in raising individual and societal awareness to prompt action towards environmental protection and to inform the public about government policies in this domain. She also alluded to the preparations for media coverage of the COP28, which will be attended by approximately 5,000 journalists, aiming to enhance awareness and identify comprehensive policies required for the environment.
“Media editors bear three responsibilities: first, recognising the significance of environmental media and granting it the necessary space for comprehensive coverage; second, developing the skills of journalists to effectively cover climate issues; and third, media editors must fully comprehend this crucial file and the opportunities it presents within this sector,” she added.
Caroline Faraj, VP Arabic Services, CNN, emphasised the importance of the Global Media Congress 2023 in bringing together thought leaders and specialist media professionals to convey clear and accurate messages about global changes, particularly environmental changes. She stressed CNN’s commitment to conducting journalistic courses in collaboration with other media institutions, focusing on how journalists can effectively address environmental issues and grasp their terminology and impact.
She added that media outlets have become increasingly aware of the importance of highlighting environmental topics, dedicating pages and seminars to this critical issue, as its impact is inextricably linked to the future of current and future generations, contributing to the construction of a sustainable and conscious future.
Noreen Al-Thawadi, Head of the English Department at the Bahrain News Agency (BNA), lauded the UAE as a hub for fostering exceptional media momentum, with the Global Media Congress serving as a leading media platform that addresses the most critical developments and trajectories that demand emphasis in media work.
She highlighted the significant role played by artificial intelligence in both the media industry and the developmental media industry, emphasising the role of media education in keeping pace with all these advancements.
She added that one of the most pressing global issues is the environment and climate change, and with the UAE hosting the COP28, the media plays a crucial role in highlighting the importance of addressing this issue and identifying how individuals, institutions, and countries can collectively address the cumulative impact of their actions on this sensitive file, which has the potential to profoundly impact the future of generations to come.
“Individuals must recognise their roles, and it is the media’s responsibility to raise awareness in this regard. There must be practical steps taken to deliver a clear and easily understandable message to the recipients through action in this area,” she added.
