Manama : The Ministry of Works won the Waste Management Solutions Award for its project on using recycled demolition and construction waste as material in road construction, as part of the Bahrain Smart Cities Summit 2025.
Ibrahim bin Hassan Al Hawaj, Minister of Works, extended his appreciation to Shaikh Khalid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Deputy Prime Minister, for honouring the ministry as one of the award recipients in recognition of its smart and sustainable city initiatives. He also commended the organisers of the event.
Minister Al Hawaj commended the efforts of the ministry’s engineers in implementing the project, highlighting that the award reflects the ministry’s commitment to adopting innovative methods that preserve and sustain natural resources.
He noted that the project marks a key step in sustainability efforts, particularly in exploring recycled waste for engineering applications. The ministry successfully constructed the first road of its kind in the Kingdom of Bahrain using modified asphalt made with processed recycled plastic.
Minister Al Hawaj highlighted that the ministry will continue to provide innovative solutions that meet community expectations, emphasising the importance of adopting modern technologies and AI applications to position the Kingdom among leading nations in the field.
The ministry is participating in the Bahrain Smart cities Summit with two working papers, which are “Strategic Guideline for Implementing Intelligent Transportation Systems in Bahrain’s Smart City” and “Sustaining Heritage and Maintaining Historical Infrastructures in Bahrain”.
