Geneva : Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), deplored attacks targeting water desalination facilities in the State of Kuwait, warning of potential consequences for public health and essential services.
Ghebreyesus noted that two desalination facilities were affected, including the West Doha Power Generation and Desalination Plant, where an incident on March 29 resulted in one fatality and damage to infrastructure.
He indicated that water services have remained uninterrupted despite the incidents, highlighting the resilience of essential services.
The WHO Director-General stressed the importance of desalination facilities in ensuring access to water and supporting health systems in Kuwait and the Gulf region, warning that damage to such infrastructure could affect hospitals, healthcare services, and overall public wellbeing.
He called for restraint and adherence to international humanitarian law, urging all parties to protect critical infrastructure that supports civilian life.
