Geneva : The World Food Programme (WFP) has warned of worsening food insecurity in Afghanistan, noting that one in five Afghans suffers from hunger. The agency called for urgent humanitarian aid to prevent further deterioration of the humanitarian situation.
In a statement released Thursday and received by Khaama Press, the WFP stressed the urgent need for humanitarian support, particularly in border areas facing rising pressure due to the daily return of thousands of Afghan families from Iran. This presents a major challenge for local communities and humanitarian organisations operating along the Afghanistan-Iran border.
In a post on X, the WFP said it is providing emergency assistance at border crossings to meet basic needs but warned that such efforts cannot be sustained without additional funding. The agency said at least $25 million is the minimum required to keep relief operations running inside Afghanistan.
The country’s economic conditions remain difficult since the Taliban took power in August 2021 following the withdrawal of US and international forces. Around 24.4 million people, roughly 60% of the population, depend on humanitarian aid for their basic needs.
