Washington : The United States Senate took the first step towards ending the government shutdown after a group of Democrats agreed to proceed without a guaranteed extension of health care subsidies.
In a preliminary procedural vote, the Senate voted 60–40 to move towards passing compromise legislation to fund the government and to hold a later vote on extending the Affordable Care Act tax credits, which expire on January 1.
Final approval could take several days if Democrats object and delay the process.
