Manama : Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Wife of His Majesty the King and President of the Supreme Council for Women (SCW), issued Decision (8) of 2025 establishing the Women in Sports Committee.
The committee will be chaired by Dr. Shaikha Hessa bint Khalid Al Khalifa, member of the SCW, and will include experts and specialists from the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC), the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports (SCYS), Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club (REHC), the General Sports Authority (GSA), the Ministry of Finance and National Economy, the Ministry of Youth Affairs, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education, the Bahrain Paralympic Committee, as well as two experienced sporting figures.
The decision stipulates that the committee aims to assess Bahraini women’s participation in sports, promote their involvement across sporting fields, and follow up on integrating women’s needs into national policies and initiatives that support the development of women’s sports, based on equal opportunity and gender balance.
The committee’s responsibilities include monitoring women’s participation in sports, identifying challenges and obstacles, and presenting recommendations. It will also propose policies, plans, initiatives, and training programmes to develop women’s sports in line with the National Plan for the Advancement of Bahraini Women (2025–2026), and recommend measures to increase women’s representation in local, regional, and international sports federations and committees.
In addition, the committee will propose means to strengthen coordination between government entities, the private sector, and civil society, including national sports clubs and youth centres, to support women’s sports. It will also suggest measures to highlight women’s success stories in sports, and review the extent to which women benefit from budgets allocated to national sports federations and clubs for competitions, tournaments, and training programmes.
The decision sets the membership term of the Women in Sports Committee at two years, renewable. The Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Women will issue a decision to appoint committee members and regulate its work.
