Cotonou : Fifty four soldiers were killed in an armed attack targeting military positions in northern Benin near the borders with Burkina Faso and Niger, according to local authorities.
The attack was carried out by an armed group on military posts in W National Park, prompting the government to reinforce its military presence in the border areas in response to the threat posed by militant groups.
Benin has witnessed a rise in cross border attacks from armed groups operating in neighbouring countries. Since January 2022, the government has deployed around 3,000 troops under Operation Mirador, later adding 5,000 more to enhance security in the north.
