Manama : On the sidelines of the 20th edition of the IISS Manama Dialogue, Iain Lindsay, former British Ambassador to Bahrain and Advisor to the Chairman of Bahrain’s Economic Development Board (EDB), underlined Bahrain’s pivotal role in fostering regional security, integration, and economic prosperity.
Speaking to Bahrain News Agency (BNA), Lindsay described Bahrain as central to the long-standing strategic interests of the United Kingdom in the Gulf, referencing a relationship spanning over 200 years.
He commended Bahrain’s hosting of the Manama Dialogue, noting its importance as a platform that brings together people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and religions.
“Bahrain has an astonishing convening role as a cosmopolitan city, and the Manama Dialogue reflects its enduring power to connect the world. This year’s event brought participants from across the globe, highlighting Bahrain’s significance as a linking point,” Lindsay said.
On the accession of the United Kingdom to the Comprehensive Security Integration
and Prosperity Agreement (C-SIPA) announced during Manama Dialogue 2024, Lindsay emphasised the agreement’s strategic importance in enhancing security cooperation and economic integration. He highlighted the role of Bahrain, the United Kingdom, and the United States as a powerful triumvirate, sending a strong signal of steadfast commitment to Gulf security and prosperity.
Lindsay also addressed the economic dimension of the agreement, which he said would attract British and American companies to Bahrain, creating jobs and enhancing investment opportunities.
“As an advisor at the Economic Development Board, my key goal is to promote investment and create jobs for Bahrainis. This agreement strengthens Bahrain’s special relationships with its allies and lays the foundation for long-term prosperity,” he remarked.
On sustainability, Lindsay underscored Bahrain’s commitment to green investment and future-proofing the economy. He noted the efforts of the EDB and the Minister of Sustainable Development to integrate sustainability into Bahrain’s development strategy. “Future investment in Bahrain must be sustainable, focusing on green projects and upskilling Bahrainis for the jobs of the future. Bahrain’s talented and hardworking people are a huge advantage for the nation, and this agreement will amplify those strengths.”
Reflecting on the Manama Dialogue’s two decades of success, Lindsay highlighted its role as a unique platform for fostering dialogue and cooperation. “This event showcases Bahrain’s ability to unite diverse perspectives, further cementing its role as a critical hub for diplomacy and engagement in the region,” he said.
