Manama : Sarah Buhiji, Chief Executive Officer of the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA), highlighted Bahrain’s achievements in hosting the 9th UN Tourism World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism, emphasising the Kingdom’s growing leadership in the gastronomy tourism sector.
Speaking to Bahrain News Agency (BNA), Buhiji described the forum as a milestone for Bahrain, noting its distinction as the first of its kind to be held in the Middle East.
On the significance of hosting the forum in Bahrain, Buhiji outlined the Kingdom’s strategic focus on gastronomy as a key pillar of its 2022-2026 tourism strategy. She said hosting such high-profile events was supported by the Kingdom’s robust infrastructure. She also highlighted Bahrain’s connectivity, noting its ease of commuting and the presence of globally renowned hotels capable of hosting major international events.
On the focus of the forum’s workshops and masterclasses, the BTEA CEO said, “This event highlights the importance of sustainability in gastronomy, with discussions on how to reduce food wastage and adopt sustainable practices,” Buhiji said.
She highlighted the participation of Michelin-starred chefs in the forum, further enhancing Bahrain’s reputation as a pioneering gastronomy destination.
Buhiji also commended the role of Bahraini chefs in promoting the Kingdom’s culinary identity. “Bahraini chefs are showcasing our food in a fusion style, telling the story of Bahraini cuisine, our spices, and what makes our kitchen unique,” she said
She added that the event also highlights the work of Bahraini farmers, reinforcing the importance of sustainability within the local culinary scene.
Buhiji expressed pride in Bahrain’s ability to host such a significant global event. “This forum showcases Bahrain’s capacity to lead in the gastronomy scene, combining tradition, innovation, and sustainability,” she said.
