The ban on catching, trading, or selling shrimp as part of the efforts to preserve fish resources will start on February 1 and continue until July 31, Dr. Khalid Ahmed Hassan, Undersecretary for Agriculture Affairs and Marine Resources at the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture said.
He pointed that the annual ban is aligned with the Gulf Cooperation Council’s (GCC) decisions to preserve marine resources, noting the ministry’s keenness to ensure the sustainability of these resources.
The undersecretary emphasised the importance of strengthening cooperation to ensure the continued enforcement of the ban, noting the efforts of the supervisory bodies and the Coast Guard in conducting inspection campaigns.
The First Article of this decision prohibits shrimp fishing in Bahrain’s territorial waters from February 1 to July 31 of every year, as well as the use of nets, tools, and machines. The second ban article prohibits shrimping in shrimp fishing areas and boat docking areas.
According to Article Three of the decision, it is illegal to sell, display, and sell fresh, chilled, frozen, and unprocessed shrimp in markets and public spaces for marketing or sales purposes during the period specified in the decision’s provisions.
Article Four stipulates that violation of the provisions of this decision shall be punished with the penalties stipulated in Decree Law (20) of 2002 regarding the regulation of fishing, exploitation, and protection of marine resources.
