Manama: There was a lively crowd in at the Indian Club on Sunday to watch the Finals Day of The Bahrain International Series Badminton Tournament 2021 round off a great week of international badminton – the expected show of force from the Club’s members, particularly the badminton section, was joined by noisy, often raucous, groups of Indonesian and Hong Kong local expats and other tournament players, actively supporting their country’s finalists.
There might have been 25 countries represented at the start of BIS2021, but come the Finals, there were only two countries still standing – Indonesia and Hong Kong, the two countries splitting the titles between them – 3 to Indonesia, 2 to Hong Kong; sadly for the Indian club members, India was not represented in any of the Finals, having to settle for a number of losing semi-finalists.
The first trophy of the day, the Mixed Doubles, was always going to be a Hong Kong win as the Final was played out by two Hong Kong pairings; Lee and Ng took the honours in straight sets – losing a very tight first set seemed to break the spirit of Law and Yeung, who couldn’t really get a challenge going in the second set.
The two Singles’ finals were highly competitive, both going down to the wire in thrilling three set matches; Aisya Fatetani took the Women’s Singles title, beating her compatriot, Komang Dewi 21/19 in the final set; the Men’s title went to Bobby Setiabudi of Indonesia, who beat Hong Kong’s Chan Yin Chak – this match really brought the crowd alive with the competing Indonesian and Hong Kong factions ‘working’ hard to drown each other out and push ‘their man’ over the line.
The Doubles titles were split – the Women’s crown went to the Hong Kong pairing of Yeung Nga Ting / Yeung Pui Lam, the Men’s to Indonesia’s Amri Syahnawi and Christopher David Widjaya; both Finals showcased badminton doubles’ skills of the highest order as the champion pairs’ enjoyed pretty comfortable straight set victories.
The BIS 2021 Prize Presentation Ceremony followed on from the completion of the Men’s Doubles Final with prize money and attractive BIS2021 trophies being distributed to the various winners and runners-up, medals handed out to the losing semi-finalists and momentos presented to the event’s sponsors and various Tournament officials and organisers.
