Manama : The Court of Cassation has rejected appeals filed by a number of defendants convicted in separate cases and sentenced to imprisonment for supporting and endorsing the Iranian terrorist attacks against Bahrain, the Chief Prosecutor of the Terrorism Crimes Prosecution stated. Their cases also involveed capturing photos and videos of places where it is prohibited, obtaining and disseminating prohibited vital data, and disseminating false news and rumours through social media,
The Public Prosecution had launched investigations following reports received from the Anti-Cybercrime Directorate concerning images, videos and comments posted on the defendants’ social media accounts. The posts included expressions of support for the Iranian terrorist attacks targeting Bahrain, photographs of locations where photography is prohibited, and the dissemination of false and misleading news and rumours that could undermine public security, cause fear among the public and weaken the morale of Bahraini society amid the attacks.
Based on the findings of the investigations and conclusive evidence establishing the defendants’ commission of the offences attributed to them, the Public Prosecution referred the cases to the courts. The defendants were tried before the High Criminal Court in several hearings, during which all legal guarantees afforded to them were observed. The court convicted them and sentenced them to imprisonment ranging from five to ten years, in addition to fines and the confiscation of seized items.
