Tokyo : A powerful typhoon approached southwestern Japan, prompting official warnings of heavy rain and strong winds across Okinawa, Amami and southern Kyushu.
The Japan Meteorological Agency warned of landslides in Kumamoto Prefecture, which was affected by a recent earthquake, and said wind speeds associated with the typhoon had reached 198 km/h.
The agency forecast up to 200 mm of rainfall over 24 hours in Okinawa and Amami, and up to 180 mm in southern Kyushu, urging residents to remain alert to the storm’s potential impacts over the weekend.
