London : Multiple passengers sustained injuries of varying severity, including serious cases, after two passenger trains collided in Bedfordshire, north of London, prompting a large-scale response from British emergency and rescue services.
British Transport Police said the collision occurred on the railway line between Luton and Bedford.
According to initial reports, a train travelling from Corby to London collided with another train travelling from Nottingham to London that had stopped due to a technical fault, causing damage to several carriages and the partial derailment of some of them.
Bedford Hospital was placed on alert to receive up to 50 injured passengers, while dozens of ambulances and air ambulance units were dispatched to the scene to provide urgent medical assistance.
James Murray, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care of the United Kingdom, said he was closely monitoring developments and commended the efforts of emergency teams responding to the incident.
Rail services to and from London’s St Pancras station were suspended, while the UK’s Rail Accident Investigation Branch launched an official investigation into the cause of the collision.
