Venice : Bahraini artist Rashid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa inaugurated his participation in the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia with the unveiling of his monumental installation, “Guarding the Passage”, before an audience of art critics, cultural figures, and international media representatives.
Through “Guarding the Passage”, Rashid Al Khalifa presents a visual and philosophical exploration of the balance between protection and openness. Positioned at the intersection of architecture and memory, the installation reimagines the concept of the “cage” as a space for human connection and interaction rather than isolation or confinement.
Made from layered red metal grids, the work balances solidity and transparency, concealing and revealing at the same time while highlighting themes of privacy and global connection. Visitors can walk through overlapping corridors where light, shadow, and movement create an immersive artistic experience.
The installation’s vivid red hue symbolises sovereignty, resilience, and Bahrain’s national identity, while its open-mesh structure reflects values of freedom, openness, and cross-cultural dialogue.
On this occasion, Rashid Al Khalifa dedicated his participation to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, commending their cultural vision and leadership in strengthening Bahrain’s position as a global centre for creativity and a beacon of civilisational dialogue.
Commenting on the participation, Rashid Al Khalifa said: “Our participation in the Venice Biennale reflects the power of art to serve as a cultural bridge between East and West. Through “Guarding the Passage”, we aim to present the reality of Bahrain today — a nation that proudly preserves its identity and achievements while embracing the world with a message of peace and tolerance.”
He added: “The work reflects the contemporary Bahraini experience, where security and stability provide the foundation for broader global engagement. Art remains one of the most powerful means of communicating our civilisational message and human values to the international community.”
La Biennale di Venezia is regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious and historic contemporary art exhibitions. The 61st edition officially opened on May 9, and will continue until November 26, welcoming artists, curators, collectors, and visitors from around the world.
