New York : A United Nations official has warned of the possibility of a widespread humanitarian crisis if an urgent solution is not found to ensure the continued flow of fertilisers and related raw materials through the Strait of Hormuz, as the planting season begins in different parts of the world.
Jorge Moreira da Silva, Executive Director of the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS), said that one-third of all fertilisers in the world go through the Strait of Hormuz, and that the ongoing disruption has impacted the entire supply chain of fertilisers.
He said that the idea of the task force was to develop a mechanism focused on fertilisers and related raw materials such as urea, sulphur, and ammonia, to prevent a massive humanitarian crisis.
da Silva added that the UN is working on creating a safe corridor for the transit of essential goods and fertilisers, stressing that the goal is to prevent a humanitarian crisis and to ensure that the most vulnerable populations have access to the food and the resources they need.
