Istanbul : Bahrain’s parliamentary division delegation participated in the 217th session of the Governing Council of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), held on the sidelines of the 152nd IPU General Assembly in Türkiye.
The delegation included Jamal Mohamed Fakhro, First Deputy Chairman of the Shura Council; MP Dr. Mahdi Abdulaziz Al Showaikh; and Kareema Mohammed Al Abbasi, Secretary-General of the Shura Council.
The Governing Council approved the summary records of the 216th session.
Dr. Tulia Ackson, President of the IPU, presented a report on activities and programmes from the previous session held in Geneva in October 2025, as well as the work of the Executive Committee.
Martin Chungong, Secretary-General of the IPU, presented a progress report on the activities carried out by the Secretariat, including the financial status of the union, the consolidated budget for 2026, the appointment of external auditors, proposed amendments to the statutes and rules, and the status of membership of some parliaments.
The Governing Council will continue its meetings during the Assembly to discuss priority topics for 2026, including the activities of committees and specialised reports.
The Council is expected to adopt the IPU strategy for 2027 – 2031 and elect a Secretary-General from among four candidates for the position.
